Dear Fibro-friends, Fibro can be such a difficult and lonely illness. Unless we have the support of friends and others who really get it, it can be a difficult road.
Now, in addition to that feeling of "isolation", particularly for those who aren't working, there's another aspect that I truly believe is a symptom of the illness itself. I've noticed that quite often my emotions are extremely tender. For instance, I used to be able to watch "horror" films or films filled with either sadness, death or other negative themes and I'd be OK.
Tonight, I could barely get through "Little House on the Prairie" without falling to pieces. Laura's dog had died and when her dad got her a new dog she didn't want "him". You'd think my own dog had died. Actually, he did, about two years ago and that was a veritable nightmare.
So, as far as TV is concerned, I've resorted to watch "old movie" channels with movies from the 30s, 40s, and 50s or Hallmark channel, so that I keep things "light".
Now, I've heard it said that Fibro causes emotional vulnerability because of our depression. I believe that could be true. At this point, I agree it probably is part of the entire chemical imbalance that's going on in our body.
So, my suggestions for you are this, to maintain emotional stability:
- Talk to your doctor (even holistic doctor) regarding either traditional medicine or supplements for the depression you may be feeling.
- Also, see if their is anything needed for anxiety.
- Make sure you are getting some, even small amount of, exercise every day.
- In the winter months, make sure you are getting at least 20 minutes of real (or artificial) sunlight every day.
- Eat right, avoid too much caffeine, don't drink alcohol (it's true that it's a depressant!), and get enough rest.
- Pray every day about how you're feeling. Your relationship with God can strengthen and bring YOU strength and a feeling of wholeness when times get tough.
- Talk to a good friend about how you're feeling. Or talk to your spouse, pastor or someone else that you trust.
- Write down your feelings, listen to soothing music or uplifting music, especially spiritual or religious music.
- Finally, do something for someone else...it helps take your mind off of yourself.
And, you can always write a blog or write on here! Just remember you are NOT alone. Also remember that tomorrow is going to be better. Don't be so hard on yourself. Love yourself as you would a friend or loved one. After all, you deserve it, don't you?!
Until tomorrow......
Blessings.....
Mo M.
