Fibro and Exercise, do they really belong together?

I remember my physician brother first telling me to quit my job, which I did not want to do. He wanted me on disability. He wasn't sure he bought into the idea of "Fibromyalgia", but he knew I was going to kill myself if I kept working 15 hour days. It was getting a bit ridiculous in hind sight, but I love what I did and I tried to keep it going. Eventually, I couldn't get out of bed and told myself that I would take a long weekend (as in take Monday as a sick day).

That Friday, in July of 1999, was my last day of work.

Moving forward, I was getting bigger with every year. Now I've never been really "obese", but I was certainly overweight. But I was always, in my healthy years, a runner. That, for me, was the only kind of exercise that worked and actually got the weight off.

However, my brother insisted that I start SOMETHING, anything at all. He even suggested that if it took percocet to get me up and moving, to take the meds and go for a walk. He was worried about my weight and moving into my 40s, I understood where he was coming from. However, I really didn't want to do it.

Finally, in April of 2008, I started. I used my cane and walked around the block. I got home winded. I was truly out of shape. Stairs were a challenge. I felt heavy and old.

I have since lost more than 20 lbs and have done everything from walking, race walking to yoga.

Here's my point, Fibro friends. It may not be easy, but you can take it easy.

DO NOT compare yourself to anyone else, just go at your own pace. I know, easier said than done, but you MUST move.

I feel so much less anxiety, depression and weakness since I've kept SOME sort of exercise in my life.

I also don't feel like I look so heavy. I'm not model thin by any means, but give me a break. That's crazy for ANYONE to strive for, even healthy people.

The point is, with the help of your doctor and his approval of course, start somewhere. Yoga can be huge, because it is slow and gentle. I even did a "chair" yoga class that was filled with people that had arthritis, MS and a couple people with Fibro, as well.

You will only do it when you're ready. I did it when I was ready...but please try to make time today for some movement. Even if it's a walk in a local park, around a high school track, or by a favorite outdoor spot.

Being outdoors has other benefits too! The vitamin D from the sun has been shown to lessen SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) as well as Fibro related depression and anxiety. Just put on some decent sneakers, tennis shoes that you find comfortable and go.

Try it today. If you put it off until tomorrow, you might not do it at all.

Most of all, do it for YOU, not for me or ANYONE else you know. Just do it!

Blessings......

Mo M.

PS I have a friend, who is my age - 49, and going in for a cardiac catheterization during the upcoming week. Please, don't let your body get so sedentary that you run into this type of trouble. Fibro can be painful, but it will not kill you. Heart disease will. Please put my friend.... D. ...in your prayers....Thank you!
